Highlights

  • Online tackling certification begins April 1 and will be available until July 1.
  • Any coaches not certified by July 1 will need to attend a certification presentation at Coaching School in Houston, July 21-23.
  • Texas coaches will have multiple options to register for online certification, using either their THSCA membership or their Register My Athlete credentials.

On April 1, 2019, Atavus—in cooperation with the Texas High School Coaches Association and the University Interscholastic League—will begin offering mandatory tackling certification for Texas public middle and high school coaches via a new online certification website.

Until now, all presentations and exams have been in-person. The process of certifying 23,000 Texas coaches started at Coaching School in July 2018 where nearly 3,000 coaches completed certification. Since the summer we’ve certified an additional 2,000 coaches at five F.A.S.T. Clinics across the state.

In total, 4,992 coaches have successfully completed tackling certification.

Although we’ve made great progress and certified thousands of coaches, we still have 18,000 coaches to go before the August 1, 2019, deadline!

If you have not yet completed certification, you will have the opportunity to do so via Atavus’ online certification website. Online certification mirrors the in-person presentations by covering three main concepts and should take approximately one hour to complete.

Like the in-person sessions, online certification will end with a 30-question exam. Unlike in-person presentations, however, coaches who certify online will be able to immediately download their certificate and can take full advantage of the drills, tackle plans, and other resources made available online post certification.

To begin online certification, the first question to answer is whether or not you are a member of the Texas High School Coaches Association.

To register for online certification using your THSCA membership ID:

  1. From April 1 to June 30, visit Atavus.com/Texas. There you will be redirected to the online certification website. Register with Atavus and gain access to online certification.

  3. Upon completion of the course materials, you will take the final exam to demonstrate your retention of the Level 1 – Tackle Certification content. The final exam is 30 questions.
  4. Once you’ve finished the final exam, you will instantly receive your results.
  5. If your results indicate that you successfully completed certification, you will have access to the Atavus Digital Tackling Academy, coaching resources, and a copy of your tackling certificate.
  6. If your results indicate that you did not successfully complete certification, you can retake the final exam immediately. Access to the coaching resources is limited to coaches who have successfully completed certification.
